Monotype Prints:
My current body of work is made up of hand pulled monotype prints. I use traditional monotype plates and gelatin plates. The gelatin prints are created by laying out ink on a large gelatin plate. I melt and pour my own gelatin plates. Images are composed of inks, foliage and hand cut masks. The beauty of gelatin printing is that you get something different from every print. The foliage pressed into the ink leaves an amazingly detailed pattern on the final image. There is a spontaneity in the medium that can not be reproduced with other processes.
Monotype is a technique that generally yields only one good impression from each prepared plate. Monotypes are prized because of their unique textural qualities. Mine are made by drawing on glass or a plate with printer’s ink. Then the drawing is pressed by hand onto a sheet of absorbent paper. The pigment remaining on the plate is usually insufficient to make another print unless the original design is reinforced. All prints will invariably differ from the first one, because variations in repainting and printing are inevitable.
Since each is unique and hand executed, monotypes cannot be considered a technique of multiple replication. But, because they are prints on paper, they are usually classed with printmaking media.
