My current body of work is made up of hand pulled monotype prints. I use traditional monotype plates and gelatin plates. The gelatin prints are created by laying out ink on a large gelatin plate. I melt and pour my own gelatin plates. Images are composed of inks, foliage and hand cut masks. The beauty of gelatin printing is that you get something different from every print. The foliage pressed into the ink leaves an amazingly detailed pattern on the final image. My monotype animals in glasses are all pulled from plastic printing plates using an Akua pin press and a standard baron. Each work is drawn out ahead of time so that the printing process can be done as quickly as possible. The drawing is laid under the plate. I then lay out all of my ink. The last step is to place the paper on the ink and transfer it. This is the best part because you are never quite sure what you are going to get.

Jessica started her career as an oil painter. Her work largely explored natural things, from the outdoors to the female form. There is a sense of whimsy in her animal prints that makes the viewer smile. She currently works as an optician as well as an artist and is inspired by her work every day. As an artist; Jessica’s many strengths include a good sense of color and design; strong drawing, painting, and printmaking skills; and an ability to quickly recognize the expressive potential in materials. Recently she has concentrated on monotype and gelatin printing. Images are composed of inks, foliage and hand cut masks. Each image is unique and one of a kind. The beauty of monotype printing is that you get something different from every print. The spontaneity of the medium along with the unique transfer of image continues to inspire new works.

Chapman has a B.S. in Art Education K-12, and a B.A. in Fine Art (with an Emphasis in Studio Art) from Southwest Minnesota State University.

Jessica lives in Rapid City with her husband, baby daughter and their two dogs. She loves to teach art to local youth and she tries to spend as much time as possible in her home studio creating and experimenting.
